The FDA, The California Department of Public Health and other state and local departments of health are investigating Salmonella in pistachio nuts and pistachio products sold by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. in California. One of the firm's customers, Kraft Foods, discovered Salmonella in a routine microbiological surveillance of their product. To date, there are pistachio products, snacks, and snack food products (such as trail mix) being recalled (see http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.html). Unfortunately, pistachios, like peanuts, are ingredients in many food products and it is expected that this recall will also expand in the immediate future. Complicating this issue is that there are several strains of Salmonella that have been identified in the recalled pistachios. As of today, one million pounds of the company's product is being recalled and a significant amount of other firms' products are also subject to recall, including many national brands.
Since pistachios are an ingredient in many consumer products, we agree with the FDA's consumer statements advising against eating/selling any brand of shelled or unshelled pistachios, or any food product containing pistachios, until the FDA can determine with effected and potentially effected firms, which pistachio and pistachio products are identified via trace back and trace forward to the products recalled by Setton Pistachio Terra Bella, Inc.
